Using The Internet to Connect During COVID-19

March 17, 2020 • Tech Tips

At Digital Link, recognize the concerns many have about COVID-19. However, since we are not Health Care Professionals, please see the recommendations made by Alberta Health Services for any questions you have about the virus. Our expertise remains in the Digital World, and that is what we will focus on.

Social Distancing Simulator

By now you have heard of social distancing. The Washington Post created a terrific simulator you can use to see the effects of social distancing. We suggest you give it a try if you would like a better understanding of why medical experts advocate for implementing this practice.

ZOOM Video

Zoom is a video service that allows you to video chat with friends and families around the world. It’s free and easy to use. This is a fantastic way to keep in touch with friends and family, while keeping everyone safe and healthy.

Virtual Musuem Tours

Take your family around the world using virtual tours of some of the biggest museums on Earth! The Louvre, which has closed during the pandemic, is still accessible via its online tour. You can also take virtual safaris and hikes around the world. If you are curious, go to Google and type in “place you are interested in” virtual tour and see what is there for you.

Google Earth

Some people forget that Google allows you to take a tour of the world. Want to see the Eifel Tower, or Central Park? You can do so from your living room. Google Earth has its top 50 cool places to check out.

#NetflixAndQuarantine

If you haven’t seen this hashtag yet, it is exactly what it says. Find a show to watch as a family and enjoy binging it. Consider viewing some lesser known movies or re-watch a classic. A few of our recommendations are:

TV Drama: Better Call Saul
TV Comedy: Brooklyn 99
Family Movie: John Mulaney & The Sack Lunch Bunch
Kids TV: Paw Patrol (we’re sorry)

Jackbox.TV

Jackbox can be played on consoles like Nintendo Switch and XBOX, but the beauty is it can also be played using free online software like Steam. This means that all you need is a phone or tablet and internet connection. You can play with people in your own home or around the world.

Jackbox has different boardgames made for online play! It is a lot of fun to play with friends and families. We can’t recommend this game highly enough!

Online Classes

Whether it’s post-secondary institutions, YouTube or something like Udemy, there are thousands upon thousands of courses available. You can learn just about anything online, so why not use this time to hone some skills on a hobby of yours.

Our world is chaotic right now, but thankfully we still have the internet. We have listed several different ways you can be sociable and have fun, while practicing social distancing. Thank you, internet, for keeping us together. See you online!
