As we wrap up the month of April, we are excited to feature another amazing non-profit organization in our community, Autism Edmonton. Keep reading to discover the meaningful work they do and learn how you can support their initiatives.
About Autism Edmonton
Autism Edmonton is Alberta’s oldest autism organization, serving the Edmonton region since 1971. For more than 50 years, they have been at the forefront of autism support in the province, walking alongside autistic individuals and families as the understanding of autism has evolved and deepened.
Founded by a group of passionate parents, the organization was built on a simple but powerful belief: no one should navigate autism alone.
Today, that same commitment continues through programs that foster connection, build understanding, and create meaningful opportunities for autistic individuals and the people who support them.
Supporting Our Community
Autism Edmonton is a trusted resource for individuals, families, and professionals across our community, and for many, it is often the first step in finding information, guidance, and connection. Their work spans family support, community engagement, advocacy, professional consultation, navigation, learning, and professional development.
They provide programs for all ages and stages of pre- and post-diagnosis, from support groups for autistic adults, parents, partners, and LGBTQ+ members, to respite, recreation, and learning opportunities. They also support individuals and families in navigating systems and accessing services, while offering learning and professional development opportunities for those working within the autism community.
Autism Edmonton sits at many tables across the community, working alongside partners to strengthen understanding, improve access to supports, and ensure autistic voices are included in decision-making spaces. This includes collaborations such as the Alberta Autism Alliance, Autism Alberta Board, Barrier Free Alberta, Children’s Autism Collaborative Team, Transitions Resource Committee and Autism Independent Living Association (AiLA) to name a few.
As community needs evolve, so do we, continually adapting our services to ensure individuals and families receive the support they need, when they need it.
At the heart of their work is connection, inclusion, and belonging.
Why It Matters
The need for support continues to grow. In Canada, 1 in 48 adults are autistic, with Alberta wait times for adult diagnosis reaching up to 7 years in some cases. In Edmonton, 1 in 36 children are diagnosed, often waiting 2 to 3 years for diagnosis.
In Alberta, wait times for an autism diagnosis can vary widely depending on age and pathway to diagnosis. For some individuals, this can mean years of waiting before receiving clarity and access to supports. These delays can deeply affect the quality of life for autistic individuals and their families, leaving many without timely understanding or connection to services.
Many autistic adults, especially those over 40, remain undiagnosed, having gone much of their lives without recognition or support.
Behind each of these numbers is a person, a family and children navigating uncertainty while seeking answers, connection, and support.
Living the Impact
Today, that same commitment continues through programs that foster connection, build understanding, and create meaningful opportunities for autistic individuals and the people who support them.
Because of this support, families are finding guidance when they need it most through timely navigation and connection to services. Inclusion is being strengthened in schools and workplaces across Edmonton, and more than 5,000 individuals are being reached through learning opportunities that deepen understanding of autism and neurodivergence.
“I am so glad we had you facilitate Autism 101 and 201 with our staff. It sparked a lot of meaningful conversation afterward, and we recognize there are important changes we need to make in how we work. The practical tips were especially helpful, and we learned so much over the past week.” -Corporate Client
This support also creates space for belonging and respite through programs like The League, Occasio, and their community support groups, helping to ease the pressure many families carry while they wait for answers and ongoing support.
What this means in real life is simple and powerful. It means a parent feeling less alone. It means an autistic adult finding community for the first time. It means a young person being better understood in their classroom or workplace.
This impact is felt every day in homes, schools, and communities across our city.

Upcoming Event

Cycle for Autism Edmonton is more than a fundraiser. It is a community gathering where individuals, families, workplaces, sponsors and supporters come together to run, roll, walk, or cycle in a welcoming and inclusive environment.
Now in its 17th year, the event is an inclusive day for everyone, regardless of how you want to participate, featuring food trucks, music, a resource fair, and family-friendly activities that celebrate connection and belonging.
Funds raised help sustain programs that provide lifelong connection, education, and support for autistic individuals and their families across the Edmonton Capital Region.
We want to thank Autism Edmonton for the difference they are making in the lives of so many families and individuals. Their support, advocacy, and resources are invaluable in helping create a more inclusive community.
