Edmonton Meals on Wheels

April 25, 2025 • Charity Spotlight

This month we are excited to feature the important organization, Edmonton Meals on Wheels. Continue reading to find out more about the work they do in our community, and how you can help support their efforts.

About Edmonton Meals on Wheels

Edmonton Meals on Wheels is a meal delivery service that specializes in providing nutritious, thoughtfully prepared meals for individuals experiencing barriers to preparing their own meals. With 1 in 4 households in Alberta experiencing food insecurity, many turn to meal assistance programs in their time of need. For some, many barriers such as physical and cognitive limitations, social isolation or financial hardship affect their ability to cook or access groceries.

Edmonton Meals on Wheels exists to address and fill gaps in community support. With home delivery, everyone can expect to receive meals that meet their nutritional needs while accommodating any dietary restrictions or need for texture modification.

Their menu is dietitian-approved and includes a healthy balance of food groups. Each meal combines flavour and nutrition by using fresh, quality ingredients that contain the nutrients needed to support their health.

Dedicated volunteers deliver meals straight to the door, while offering genuine moments of connection and warmth. Daily meal delivery enables people to live independently and comfortably while maintaining their overall well-being.

About the People They Serve

Kim Blackburn’s story highlights the impact of Edmonton Meals on Wheels’ services in the community. Kim is a participant in the Going Home Program, a compassionate initiative that supports recently discharged individuals by providing a week of free meals.

When Kim returned home from the hospital, she realized that recovery came with its challenges. “It was scary,” Kim says, “I had a hard time in that first week [returning from hospital]. I didn’t have the meals yet, so that was a big obstacle, but I knew Meals on Wheels was coming.”

Once she began receiving meals, Kim realized that her physical health was improving. “I have more energy, and I never thought of that. I’m feeling better, and having those meals regularly and eating properly is teaching me lots.”

After finishing up with Going Home, Kim decided to continue service with Meals on Wheels. In addition to the meals, Kim thinks the volunteers are “so gentle and kind” and appreciates their visits when they deliver her meals.

How You Can Help

Edmonton Meals on Wheels relies on its donors and supporters to keep meals affordable for their clients. In addition to Going Home, they also offer meal subsidies for those living on a fixed income. These subsidies are self-funded, but with more support, they can expand our reach in the community and ensure that anyone facing a barrier can access our services.

They are also looking for volunteers! Edmonton Meals on Wheels has a variety of opportunities, including volunteer driving and kitchen prep. Kitchen volunteers help by preparing ingredients and assembling meals. Volunteer drivers deliver meals while performing informal wellness checks.
