International Women’s Day is tomorrow! Our Communications team boasts some incredibly talented, inspiring, creative, and strong women. Today, we’re excited to connect with Mariessa, our Web Developer & Graphic Designer, as she approaches her one-year anniversary with Digital Link. Mariessa is a vital part of our team, and we feel incredibly fortunate to have her with us!
Get to Know Mariessa!
Digital Link (DL): If you could describe your design style in three words, what would they be?Â
Mariessa Pinto (MP): Simple, clean and user-centered.Â
I focus on creating designs that are visually appealing yet functional, ensuring that every element serves a purpose. My goal is to make designs that feel intuitive and effortless for the user while maintaining a polished and modern aesthetic.
DL: We know you love camping and hiking! Do you have a favourite spot? Does nature help inspire you creatively? Â
MP: My all-time favorite camping spot is Ruckle Provincial Campground on Salt Spring Island, BC. You camp right along the rocky shoreline, falling asleep to the sound of the waves and watching the ferries pass by. It’s absolutely magical.Â
Nature is a huge source of inspiration for me. I draw creativity from the organic shapes and forms found in natural elements, as well as the beautifully balanced color palettes in the environment. The way complementary and contrasting colors naturally coexist in landscapes often influences my design choices in unexpected ways.

DL: Tell us honestly! How is working at home with two Aussies?! Do you have any other pets? Would you like more?Â
MP: Haha, I love it! Working from home with two Aussies means every break turns into cuddle time or a quick game of fetch. It definitely keeps things entertaining!Â
I also have a 14-year-old Green Cheek Conure named Stu, who’s been with me for most of my life. For now, our house feels full, but who knows what the future holds! I’ve been thinking about fostering dogs for a while, so maybe that will be our next big adventure.

DL: What’s your go-to book or activity when you need inspiration or a creative break?Â
MP: My go-to activity when I hit a creative block is taking my pups for a walk. I love exploring the river valley trails here in Edmonton. It’s the perfect way to reset my mind and find inspiration in nature. The fresh air, changing seasons, and quiet moments away from a screen help spark new ideas and bring a fresh perspective to my work.Â
Sometimes, stepping away and immersing myself in something simple, like the rhythm of a walk or the natural patterns around me, is exactly what I need to reignite my creativity.
DL: Do you have a work playlist? What are some of your favourite tunes to listen to?Â
MP: I do! My work playlist was actually made for me by a dear friend, which makes it even more special. Jon Bellion is my favorite artist, though it’s impossible to pick just one favorite song.Â
When I’m not listening to Jon Bellion, I usually have folk and acoustic music playing—it’s the perfect background vibe for staying focused and creative.
DL: Is there a particular project you’ve worked on that was the perfect blend of creativity and empowerment?
MP: Yes in fact! I worked on a campaign for WIN House last year for their Night En Noir fundraiser event. This included a full ad campaign for billboard and busses as well as event materials like signage and decor. Â
This project was incredibly empowering because it helped amplify the mission of WIN House—providing a safe haven for women and children fleeing domestic violence. The design and messaging were carefully crafted to reflect both the strength and resilience of survivors while creating a sense of unity and support within the community.
Being part of a project that not only challenged my creativity but also made a tangible impact was truly rewarding. Seeing the campaign come to life and knowing it contributed to raising awareness and funds for such a vital cause was an unforgettable experience.
DL: As a woman in a creative field, what advice would you give to other women looking to break into design or tech?Â
MP: It would be a lie to say that breaking into the field right now isn’t challenging. My advice is to find ways to stand out by exploring avenues beyond traditional job applications. Pursue passion projects, gain hands-on experience, and seek out volunteer opportunities.
Many non-profits need design or digital support but often can’t afford agency prices. This creates a great opportunity to grow your portfolio while making a meaningful impact. Not only will you refine your skills, but you’ll also build connections and demonstrate initiative, which can set you apart in a competitive industry.
Most importantly, stay curious, keep learning, and don’t be afraid to take up space. Your unique perspective and creativity are your greatest assets.

A huge shoutout to Mariessa for sharing what motivates and uplifts her in both her personal and professional life.
Remember to take some time and celebrate the amazing women around you tomorrow…and all the days following too!
