I recently had the honour of chatting with Ben Stelter’s dad, Mike Stelter. Through our conversation, it’s clear that Ben’s bravery and joy were a guiding light not only for his family, but also for the many people who met him. The love Ben held in his heart for his family was evident in everything he did. It was the kind of love that you could feel in every room he entered, and his concern for others, even as he faced his own health battles, set him apart. His dad shared how everyone believed they were “Ben’s favourite” because that is how he made others feel.
That was just one of the many remarkable things about Ben; his ability to make people feel special, even in the toughest of circumstances. In the hospital, Ben would often ask about other children’s well-being. On one occasion, while in the ICU, Ben became concerned for another young patient. Despite his own struggles, he wanted to make sure the other boy was doing okay. His empathy and kindness, at such a young age, were unmatched.
Ben’s passion for life was also evident in his love of sports. A huge fan of the Edmonton Oilers, Ben had the opportunity to meet his idol, Connor McDavid, in a memorable moment during the pandemic. Despite the mask, Ben recognized him instantly, and the two shared an instant connection. Ben’s charm and authenticity were impossible to ignore, touching the lives of many.
Ben Stelter Foundation
The Ben Stelter Foundation was established to celebrate Ben’s desire to make life a little easier for other children. Even in his own struggles, Ben wanted to bring magic and joy to other kids in similar situations. While in the hospital, Ben used his own money to ensure that other kids had cool gifts to choose from in the Treasure Chest. These were given to the patients as a reward after receiving a needle or performing other acts of bravery during their treatment or stay.
The foundation focuses on creating unforgettable experiences and providing resources for families navigating pediatric cancer.
Ben’s experiences led to the realization that there are many gaps in healthcare, particularly when it comes to medical equipment and the coverage needed to access it. For example, Ben had trouble walking, and when a walking aid was recommended, his family found the equipment cost significantly more than what insurance would cover. This fueled the desire to help other families access the equipment their children need.
The foundation has been instrumental in helping families get the resources they need, as well as supporting pediatric cancer research. One such initiative is the Liquid Biopsy Project, which aims to create a better way of diagnosing and tracking the effectiveness of cancer treatments. The foundation has also been a major advocate for proton therapy, a cancer treatment that is currently not available in Canada. However, after nearly two years of work and advocacy, the Ben Stelter Center for Proton Therapy and Neurosciences is set to break ground in 2025. This will bring the much-needed treatment to families who otherwise would have to travel outside of Canada for care. The center is expected to be completed by late 2027 or early 2028, a huge accomplishment and necessary feat.
Magical Experiences for Children
In addition to the work done for medical research and resources, the Ben Stelter Foundation also focuses on creating magical experiences for children. Whether it’s sending kids to Disney World, Universal Studios, or West Edmonton Mall for a week-long getaway, the foundation works to bring joy and happiness to each child tailored to their individual dreams. From shopping sprees to rides in luxury cars, the foundation creates memories that families cherish for a lifetime.
These experiences are not just about fun; they give families a chance to feel normal, even if only for a moment. As Ben’s family has witnessed firsthand, these moments provide a much-needed escape from the hardships of living with a diagnosis, allowing them to be kids again.
For other families facing similar battles, Ben’s dad offers encouraging advice: stay positive and make the most of every day. No matter how difficult the situation is, the moments of joy and laughter are priceless.
Ben’s own family had a pivotal moment before they traveled to Disneyland for what they feared might be their last trip together. Despite being told that Ben might not make it, they decided to go anyway. To everyone’s amazement, Ben’s health improved dramatically. He not only enjoyed the trip but was also able to skate with the Oilers afterward; a memory his family holds dear.
The Foundation’s Impact
The Ben Stelter Foundation continues Ben’s legacy to make an incredible impact on the lives of families facing pediatric cancer. The foundation provides critical resources, advocates for more research, and offers support for these children and their families.
Ben’s family is grateful for the support of the community and the outpouring of love and generosity they receive. People continue to donate “for Ben”, something his family holds close to their hearts.
How You Can Help
The Ben Stelter Foundation is always looking for ways to grow and support more families through research, medical equipment, magical experiences, or venture philanthropy. Your support helps continue Ben’s legacy.
Ben’s Tournament of Hearts is happening December 27-29, and space is still available. This is a great opportunity to support the foundation and have some fun. Ben’s Cup 2024 is currently sold out, showing the impact of Ben’s story as kids raise money to support other children.
Be sure to follow the Ben Stelter Foundation on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and X to stay up to date on other events and ways to lend your support.
If Ben were here today, Mike knows he would be thrilled with the impact he continues to have, “he would be so happy and proud, and would be front and center setting up the magical experiences for the kids.”
When I asked what kind of impact they hope the foundation will have on pediatric cancer research and families in need, Mike shared that they want families to feel loved, to know that someone cares about them, and find better treatments; with the goal of discovering a cure. Ben’s light shone bright, and it is evident that his legacy will continue to impact the lives of many through his foundation, his family and his bravery.
