May 22, 2025 • Product Reviews

Artificial intelligence is rapidly evolving, and Google is making it’s mark. With new breakthroughs across communication, productivity, accessibility, and creativity, the world is entering a new phase of AI: more powerful, more personal, and more helpful than ever before.

In Tuesday’s Google I/O 2025 Keynote, several announcements were made. Here is a breakdown of what you may have missed.

A More Personalized Intelligence

Google’s Gemini AI ecosystem is growing rapidly. With over 400 million users, usage has increased by 45%, demonstrating just how deeply AI is being woven into everyday life. The latest release, Gemini 2.5 Pro and Gemini 2.5 Flash, is slated to be faster, smarter, and more secure than ever before.

The new models offer:

  • Native audio output that can express natural speech nuances like whispering or emphasis.
  • Multilingual capabilities in over 24 languages.
  • Advanced contextual reasoning via “Deep Think,” a feature that simulates deeper cognitive thinking.

Google is also integrating personal context, giving users the ability to personalize their AI experience. With full control and permission-based access, Gemini can tailor results using your data from Gmail, Calendar, and more.

Smarter Searching

With the introduction of AI Mode, users can ask complex, layered questions and receive curated responses with rich content including images, maps, and verified sources. This will appear as a new search bar in Google.

It’s currently available in the United States, but we will have to wait a bit longer for it to arrive in Canada. You can use it to find links, but also ask more questions, giving you more information at the click of a button.

Key updates include:

  • Follow-up capabilities for multi-step questions.
  • Deep Search that generates expert-level reports.
  • Personalized suggestions based on your past activity.
  • Complex data visualizations for sports and finance queries.

Google Lens and Project Astra are exploring the world of visual search. Astra lets users “Search Live” using their phone camera, essentially turning real-world observations into instant information—like a live, intelligent version of FaceTime with Search.

Productivity Tools

Google announced the different ways people can work and collaborate. Here are some of the latest updates:

  • Gemini Live: Talk with Gemini about anything and everything. Offers real-time support for tasks like preparing for interviews or marathons, with live camera and screen-sharing in 45+ languages.
  • Project Mariner: Helps users interact with the web, multitask, and automate workflows.
  • Smart Replies in Gmail: Personalized suggestions using your own context and data.
  • Google Meet: Natural-sounding speech translation is rolling out in English and Spanish, with more languages on the way.

Smarter Shopping

This was one announcement that stood out to me. As an avid online shopper (no thanks, malls!) this is one feature that I am certainly curious about.

Here’s how it works:

  • Virtual Try-On: See how clothes look on your body using AI across different body types.
  • AI Mode Shopping: Set your budget, get notified when items go on sale, and go from inspiration to purchase seamlessly.

Creativity Unlocked

Generative AI continues to push the boundaries of creative expression. Honestly, I am not sure how I feel about the evolution of artistic expression via AI, and wonder how this will impact artists and creators long-term.

Google offers the following:

  • Imagen 4: Generates stunning visuals 10x faster than previous models, now with editing capabilities.
  • Veo 3: Adds native audio generation to video, including dialogue and sound effects.

AI is across the Android ecosystem, including cars, watches, TVs, and even XR headsets and XR glasses (coming soon).

AI for Accessibility and Global Impact

Google is also investing in how AI can serve the greater good:

  • Project Astra is working to assist people with vision impairments.
  • FireSat will detect wildfires via satellite monitoring.
  • Wing has already proven useful during hurricanes, delivering supplies based on real-time needs.

From making search smarter and communication easier, to unlocking creative expression and transforming productivity, Google made several announcements regarding what direction intelligent technology is taking.

AI is gradually integrating into various aspects of our lives. While it can be intimidating, it’s definitely worth exploring and using safely for our benefit.
