How Technology Can Keep You Active

April 4, 2019 • Tech Tips

Many would argue that technology has had a negative influence on physical activity. They’re not exactly wrong. Unfortunately, children in Canada are ranked incredibly low in a report focussed on physical activity. The report states that it is a combined result of “too much screen time, the urbanization of communities and increasing automation of domestic chores.” However, while we agree children should experience the outdoors and engage in physical activity, technology can be a wonderful way of keeping you active. At least, when it’s used properly!

How can technology keep you active?

Technology has advanced to the point where people are able to carry around their phone in the form of a watch. Fitbit and Apple Watches are two of the most popular type of watch-devices that have hit the market. These devices have the ability to:

  • Monitor your heart rate
  • Track your sleep stages
  • Count your steps
  • Remind you to move

Of course, it may seem like these devices are only good for adults, but Fitbit has its own line for children. Similar to the adult version, the Fitbit Ace is water resistant, allows children to see stats and goals, and is easily customizable!

Physical devices are just the start of staying active.

It’s not just devices that are keeping people active, but the apps installed on phones. Companies promoting health and fitness have certainly gotten creative in regard to encouraging people to get moving. You have probably heard all about the enthusiasm for getting outside that accompanied the release of Pokémon Go, but it certainly wasn’t the first mobile game to encourage activity.

Also known as “Simply Work It” is an app that offers exercise videos led by personal trainers. Sworkit is used by 13 million people and also has a specialized app for children, which makes it extremely popular. It’s designed for any level of physical activity, with workouts ranging from core-oriented exercises to full-body.

Zombies, Run!

Do you have what it takes to survive the zombie apocalypse? Zombies, Run! is a running app where you are en route to an outpost to deliver supplies, rescue survivors, and defend your home. Through your headphones, you’ll be given your mission and follow the story. To get your heart rate up, the developers have included zombie chases, requiring you to run faster. If you need motivation when on a run, then this is certainly the app for you.

Cassey Ho is undoubtedly one of the most influential fitness gurus. Her art is Pilates and she maintains an incredibly active presence on YouTube, providing free workout routines for anyone who is interested. And you can access all that on her Blogilates app, along with a monthly workout calendar!

Pokémon Go

We couldn’t mention it in passing and then not talk about it. Released in 2016, Pokémon Go quickly became one of the most used apps, having been downloaded more than 500 million times by the end of the year. The app was designed to promote physical activity and help local businesses grow. By using GPS to locate Pokémon, users are required to move from one location to the next in order to capture, battle, and train the Pokémon. While the hype has mostly died down, you can still see people out and about trying to catch ‘em all.

We’d love to know what your thoughts are on using technology to stay active! Do you think technology should be used to stay active? If so, what are your favourite devices or apps to use?
