Life Apps Part 2: Saving Money at the Grocery Store

October 10, 2019 • Tech Tips

I don’t know about you, but I love finding new ways to save money at the grocery store. There are handy apps out there that help you to save money while shopping for essentials every week.

Flipp App

Flipp is a convenient app that helps you save money by consolidating all flyers and coupons from every Canadian store that carries one. It’s a truly functional app. All you have to do is put in your grocery list and it populates all of the flyers that have deals on that item that week. Go through the flyers and “clip” the items that have the best deals. While shopping, cost compare the store’s price for the item vs. the item you clipped from the flyers. Once you get to the till, ask the sales associate to price match the items you clipped from the flyers. You’ll be saving money in no time!

Why we love this app: It’s a quick and easy way to save money at the grocery store. All of the flyers are laid out for you in an easy to clip format.

Flash Food App

The Flash Food app offers shoppers huge discounts on items that are nearing their best before dates. Here’s how it works: login to the app, and it will show you the discounted items at stores near you. Select the items you would like to purchase and pay for them using the app. Head to the store to pick up your items from the “Flash Food Zone” (a big cooler that contains all of the Flash Food items that customers have purchased), and check out at the customer service desk on your way out.

Why we love this app: It saves you money, while also diverting items that are near their best before date from the landfill!

Checkout 51

The Checkout 51 app is a free cashback app that pays when you buy everyday items from the grocery store. Here’s how it works: Browse the app for offers for the week. Categories can include dairy and eggs, bakery, meat and seafood, etc. Save the offers you plan on buying that week at the grocery store in the app. Next, shop at your favourite store (it can literally be any grocery store). When you get home, photograph and upload your receipt to the app. You can redeem your cashback once you’ve accumulated $20 in savings.

While Checkout 51 use to exclusively send you a check in the mail, they now have a PayPal option for you to use to redeem your cashback. Another great thing about using Checkout 51 is that you can use it in conjunction with other grocery savings apps like Flipp and Flash Food. That way you’re doubling up on the savings!

Why we love this app: You’re earning cashback on everyday items that you would normally be purchasing at the grocery store anyways!

Here are just a few interesting apps that can help you save (and earn!) some money while grocery shopping. Do you have a favourite app that helps you save money? Let us know on social media!
