The cost of servers is increasing rapidly; and unfortunately, this trend isn’t expected to slow down anytime soon.
According to TechRadar, recent shifts in manufacturing priorities are forcing companies to rethink what they produce. Many hardware manufacturers are reducing or even pausing production of consumer-focused memory so they can meet growing demand from enterprise and data center customers. As a result, major manufacturers like Dell, Lenovo, HP, and HPE are preparing for noticeable price increases.
Due to this shortage, many experts are predicting prices for electronics like laptops, tablets, and smartphones will increase by as much as 20%, or higher.
Why Is This Happening?
Several key components used in servers are under pressure right now, including:
- Memory (RAM)
- NAND storage (used in SSDs)
- Hard drives
- Advanced semiconductor chips
The main driver behind this shift is the rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI). Manufacturers are prioritizing AI-related hardware, which is more profitable and in higher demand. This is reducing the supply of traditional server components and pushing prices higher.
“Memory chips or RAM (Random Access Memory) are in short supply around the world. RAM allows your computer to access data quickly and efficiently; however, major tech companies, including Google, Microsoft, and Meta are buying up the global supply to fuel their AI centres.” –Global News
In a recent Instagram post, Cross Talk Solutions highlighted a situation where a client purchased a server in October 2025 for $5,480. However, when they requested a backup server this month, identical to their initial purchase, they received a quote of over $20,000 for the same hardware
That’s nearly a 4x increase for identical hardware. This is only one example of just how volatile pricing has become.

What Can You Do About It?
There are a few practical ways to manage these rising costs:
1. Plan purchases earlier: If you know you’ll need upgrades, don’t wait. Pricing and availability are becoming less predictable.
2. Consider refurbished hardware: Certified refurbished servers can offer savings and are often readily available.
3. Work with trusted businesses: A reliable IT partner may have access to inventory or alternate solutions.
