The World’s Spookiest Technologies

October 26, 2022 • Tech Tips

Today we are taking a dive into the world of spooky technologies, and how they might add a little fright to your daily life. While technology adds plenty of good in our lives, it can also be downright frightening sometimes!

Hearing voices in the grocery store

Imagine you’re perusing the aisles at a grocery store and you hear a voice telling you that the salad dressing in front of you is on sale. No one around you appears to have heard the voice, just you. While this is creepy, and you feel like you might be going crazy, there is an explanation!

A company called Holosonics created a technology that creates sound in a narrow beam, just like light. The sound can be directed at any object in a specific location, like someone standing in an aisle at the grocery store or in a museum. Companies are beginning to use this technology in grocery stores for targeted advertising.

DNA hacking

The first human genome was fully mapped in 2003 and, ever since, scientists have been exploring the technology and how to use it to their advantage. From creating the perfect tiny human, to fighting viruses and diseases, the technology does have its advantages.

There are creepy factors around it, however. Technological advances in the field can lead to possible super bugs that can attack a specific genetic code. By giving some infants a genetic advantage over others, it might create a two-tiered system of human beings, where some are genetically superior to others. This technology is still in the research phase, but thinking of the potential future implications gives us the chills!

Scary thoughts

Cognitive scientists are using the latest technologies to see inside the brain, while it’s working! Marketers are already using this type of information to see what parts of the brain light up while you are watching advertising. In the future, governments, law enforcement and even employers could use this type of technology to determine if you are lying, if you have committed a crime, or if you are thinking of committing a crime. It’s spooky to think that others could see into our deepest thoughts.

Singularity

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has come a long way since computers were first invented back in the 1960s. Back in 1993, math professor Vernor Vinge proposed the idea of singularity, a time at which computers may become self-aware through advanced AI. These super computers could eventually become more advanced than human intelligence and could even take over the world. While this scenario is entirely hypothetical, it doesn’t make it any less scary.

While technology plays many great roles in our lives, there is always the possibility of technology taking a spooky turn in the future. What technologies make you a little weary? Comment below!
