In a recent blog post (here) I talked about some camping tech for 2020 that had me all excited. Now I want to follow that up with a product review for the Thermacell MR300 Portable Mosquito Repeller.
The Thermacell Portable Mosquito Repeller
I went on a back-country camping trip in Jasper National Park this week. And if you’ve been living in Alberta, you know we have been getting more than average rainfalls this summer. Especially in the woods, this means the mosquitoes are thriving. Suspecting as much, I bought one of these portable mosquito repellers with the hope that it would help make our trip even a little bit less miserable.
Friends, I am here to tell you about the promised land! It is almost entirely mosquito-free, reasonably economical, and wholly easy. The repeller is about the size of one of those giant bricks of a mobile phone we used in the 90s; but exceptionally light. You screw in your small butane container (included), slide in one of the three included scent pads, and turn it on. After a few seconds, you press the start button to ignite…something inside (look at the indicator on top to make sure it is glowing red) and then sit back and enjoy your bite-free zone. We ran the repeller all evening for two days, used two pads and most of one fuel container, and the mosquitoes stayed away from us. The other 4 people at the campsite did not fare quite so well.
I don’t think it would work while you are hiking, but we didn’t find the mosquitoes too bad on the trail – traditional spray worked fine for that. But while sitting around the campsite, this little gadget made everything about 300% more enjoyable.
I bought mine at Canadian Tire. But they are available at many stores and online. You can also buy refills.
If you are planning a camping trip this summer, I can’t recommend the Thermacell Portable Mosquito Repeller enough!
